Our MAN marine diesel engines can already run on 100% Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and we recently introduced the maritime sector to the new MAN hydrogen dual fuel engine. And we’re also a frontrunner when it comes to industrial applications, with natural gas engines that accept up to 20% hydrogen in the fuel mix.
What do we see as the key developments today, with the greatest impact when it comes to improving sustainability? we see particularly strong potential in HVO100, H2DF, No NOx and H2 blending. We will also continue to invest in our ReMAN programme, which gives older and second-hand engines a new lease on life and recycles engines that have reached the end of their useful service life.
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is made from hydrogenated vegetal oils and residual waste such as animal fat. It can be added to a fuel blend or combusted separately as a pure fuel of its own. HVO100 can be used both in new diesel engines and specific older models. In the case of MAN engines manufactured before 2021, the serial number needs to be checked beforehand to make sure the unit is suited.
H2DF stands for Hydrogen Dual Fuel. H2DF engines can run on a combination of two fuels: diesel oil and hydrogen. A marine dual fuel engine is just as powerful and reliable as a conventional diesel engine but releases significantly less CO2 into the atmosphere. This makes H2DF a key ‘interim’ technology in the on-going energy transition.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) is a generic term for various compounds of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O). Nitrogen oxides are released during combustion at high temperatures and can have a negative impact on people’s health and the environment. ‘No Nox’ refers to a technical solution developed by MAN Rollo that prevents natural gas engines from releasing these emissions during operation.
When it comes to today’s energy supply, we see two overarching desires: an increasingly prominent role for wind, solar and alternative fuels; and strict safeguards for the continuity of this supply. But how to combine these two goals? One approach that may contribute is mixing hydrogen with natural gas: H2 blending. Virtually every MAN natural gas engine can run stably and without prior adjustments on a mix of 20% hydrogen and 80% natural gas, with safety and operational continuity guaranteed.
ReMAN is one of the mainstays of MAN Rollo’s range of solutions. ReMAN is based on the circular principle that it’s better to re-use something than make it from scratch – which is also part of our company philosophy. The programme not only presents our clients with financial advantages; its items can also be delivered at shorter notice than a completely new engine. All ReMAN products satisfy the relevant manufacturing standards, have been extensively tested by MAN and come with a full factory guarantee. This means even more peace of mind for clients using our machines.
